Hatchbacks aren’t generally as popular here in Canada, or in North America as a whole, as they are in Europe and elsewhere. We largely prefer sedans over hatches, and it’s for practical reasons as well as because we largely prefer the way sedans look. However, every now and again a model comes along where there’s more difference between the sedan and hatch versions than just the rear end and the amount of doors, and the 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT is just such a model. The regular Hyundai Elantra sedan is a great car, but the Hyundai Elantra GT offers something a little different and it could make a lot of buyers think more seriously about going for a hatchback for a change.

What exactly is the Elantra GT?

As well as being a hatchback rather than a sedan like the regular Elantra, the Elantra GT is also a slimmed-down range. While the Elantra is available in Essential, Preferred, Luxury and Ultimate trim levels, the Elantra GT is only available in Preferred and Luxury trims. The Elantra GT looks sportier than the sedan version of the Hyundai, but the sporty credentials of the GT are more than skin deep. The Elantra has lighter steering and more emphasis all round on comfort, the GT gets more power and better handling, and there are also styling differences beyond the overall body shape.

Engines and performance

Both versions of the Elantra have a standard 2.0-litre inline-four under the hood, but the one in the GT develops 161 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque, which is 14 horsepower more than the sedan. The Preferred trim gets a standard six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic is available and it’s the standard transmission in the GT Luxury.

With its hatchback rear the Elantra GT offers around two-thirds more cargo space with the rear seats up than the trunk of the sedan can deliver, and the interior of the GT is quite different too. It does cost a little more for the GT but the quality of trim and materials is better, even though there are plenty of soft-touch materials to be found throughout the cabin of the sedan.

Features and equipment

As there are just two trim levels of 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT there’s no such thing as a basic one. Standard features of the GT Preferred include: 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, rear spoiler, rearview camera, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, remote keyless entry and even a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Stepping up to the Elantra GT Luxury then adds the likes of 17-inch alloy wheels, six-speed automatic transmission, panoramic sunroof and dual-zone climate control instead of the standard air conditioning.

And of course, one of the standout features for the 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT and all Hyundai models here in Canada is the class-leading warranty which covers the GT for 5 years or up to 100,000 miles.
